No question - Sanssouci Palace, the summer residence of Frederick II, is Potsdam's main tourist attraction. In German Sanssouci means "free from care". Here the king wanted to live far away from courtly necessities and government business. The palace, which was built between 1745 and 1747 by Knobelsdorff, is of incomparable beauty and is one of Germany's most beautiful palaces. The building founded its own architectural style, the Friderician rococo.
All rooms are richly furnished with furniture, paintings, sculptures and porcelain. Nevertheless, the palace has a private atmosphere. It is only a few steps from the inside to the outside on the uppermost vineyard terrace. Inside and outside, nature and art merge to a unity here in an impressive way. The guided inside tour takes about 45 minutes.
